The birds' diet consists of fish and some small mammals. Being opportunistic feeders, they don't have to hunt every day. Only about 70% of all attacks are successful. Migrating birds appear on communal wintering grounds during the fall. Not all birds of this species have to migrate. They are not afraid of the cold, but move searching for open waters where they could fish. The birds are excellent hunters. They are capable of taking prey away from other birds. The species was named for its white head feathers, giving an appearance of baldness. According to another version, the species got its name after the Middle English word meaning “shining white.”

American Bald Eagle Picture -
chicks, aviaries
These are proud, magnificently looking birds, living in evergreen trees and cliffs near water. Females are somewhat larger than males. They have a white head and tail. These characteristics appear at about the fifth year of their life when the birds reach maturity. These birds live up to 20 years. Their reproductive rate is very low; having one eaglet in the nest is common. When there are two or more eaglets, the larger one may kill its siblings or they die because of lack of food.
