These birds make an important part of the environment. They help with nature's clean-up process. In some states, these birds are listed as threatened. In recent years, the birds have improved in numbers, productivity, and security greatly. Killing these birds is illegal since 1940. DDT and other pesticides detrimental for the species are banned in the 1970's. Today, human encroachment and poaching are the only threats to these birds.

This is a long-lived, fierce-looking, powerful bird, a national symbol of the United States. The birds reach sexual maturity and acquire the appearance of adults when four or five years old. Not all young birds survive their first winter, especially in northern areas where water sources freeze over and these predators are short of food. Northern populations have to migrate to warmer areas or to large rivers that remain open. Adults are identified by their white head and tail, and a solid brown body. The birds have a large, curved, yellow bill. Females are considerably larger than males in this species. Breeding pairs of these birds mate for life and care for the young together.
