Bald eagles were chosen to be the symbol of the USA, because of their power and nobility. It's the only large birds confined to North America. These birds were common on the territory of modern USA in the early 18th century. The first settlers killed them in large numbers and destroyed their habitats. Tough relationships with humans continued up to the 1940's when it became illegal to kill this species according to the Bald Eagle Act. Although protected by the government, these birds suffered much from pesticides, lead and other agents. Only in the beginning of the 21st century, Bald Eagles upgraded their status to common in some areas.
