Information On The American Bald Eagle

Information on the american bald eagle can be found on a bird breeder site along with a photo section. Over the history, the population of these birds declined several times. First settlers hunted them, as they believed these predators killed domestic stock. Humans moved to the west and destroyed the most suitable habitats of these birds. In the 20th century, these birds were protected by law, but they suffered greatly from contamination of their food by DDT and other pesticides. These chemicals caused abnormal breeding behavior and were detrimental for the eggshells making it impossible for the embryos to survive. The scientific name of this national bird of the United States is Haliaeetus leucocephalus. It means a bird with a white head. The birds of this species are found over most of North America. Only adult birds are distinguished by white heads. They get white heads and tails when they are 4 or 5 years old. Young birds are dark brown with a touch of white on the tail and underwings. In general, these are powerful birds with a strong beak, yellow eyes with very sharp eyesight, and a huge wingspan. These birds live near open water such as lakes, marshes, and rivers. Information on the american bald eagle can be found on a bird breeder site along with a photo section.
