American Bald Eagles - Breeding

American Bald eagles breed for life, but a lost mate can be replaced quickly. Together they build the nest (called an aerie) about 4 feet in diameter and 3 feet deep, reusing it and repairing it each year. (The largest Bald eagle nest was found in Florida, it weighed about 2 tons.) In March or April the female lays two 3-inch long eggs, but only one chick is hatched. Incubation lasts 35 days. Both adults incubate the eggs and feed their chick fish. Although adult American Bald eagles have no enemies, chicks should be protected from great horned owls, raccoons, and ravens.
